A refined 18th-century Mughal miniature portrait of a court lady, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This work by Muhammad Rizavi Hindi, an artist active in the mid-18th century, belongs to the tradition of Mughal miniature painting. The composition features a female figure in profile, a standard convention for courtly portraiture of the period. She is depicted in the act of pouring wine, a common motif that allowed artists to demonstrate their skill in rendering delicate gestures and fine accessories.
The figure wears a translucent green veil over a choli, adorned with multiple strands of pearls and precious stones. The artist employs a refined technique, using thin brushes to define the facial features and the texture of the jewellery. The background is a muted, dark grey oval, which serves to isolate the subject and focus attention on her attire and the objects she holds. This oval is set within a rectangular frame, a common format for such miniatures, which were often collected in albums or muraqqa.
The colour palette is balanced, relying on the contrast between the cool green of the garment and the warm, golden tones of the border. The application of gold leaf on the jewellery and the edges of the veil adds a subtle luminosity to the piece. The work reflects the stylistic preferences of the later Mughal period, where portraiture became increasingly focused on individual characterisation while maintaining the formal constraints of the courtly aesthetic. The precision of the line work and the careful layering of pigments are characteristic of the high level of craftsmanship expected in royal workshops. This print captures the original's delicate balance of colour and form, offering a clear view of the artist's attention to detail in the rendering of textiles and ornaments.
