A refined woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring a sparrow in flight alongside blooming cotton roses.
This woodblock print belongs to a series of large-format flower studies by Katsushika Hokusai, produced during the 1830s. The composition features a branch of cotton roses, or hibiscus mutabilis, rendered with a focus on the structural form of the petals and the jagged edges of the foliage. A sparrow is depicted in mid-flight to the left, providing a sense of movement that contrasts with the static nature of the floral arrangement.
Hokusai employs a refined colour palette, utilising soft pinks for the blossoms and deep, muted greens for the leaves. The background is a warm, pale yellow, which allows the subject matter to occupy the visual field without the need for complex environmental detail. The artist uses clean, precise lines to define the contours of the bird and the delicate veins within the petals, demonstrating his technical control over the woodblock medium.
In the tradition of kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, this work balances observation of the natural world with the stylistic conventions of the Edo period. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a clear, balanced arrangement that draws the eye across the paper. The signature and seals of the artist are positioned in the lower left, confirming the work as part of his later output. This print is an example of Hokusai's ability to capture the essence of a subject through simplified forms and a disciplined approach to colour application. It remains a representative piece of his late-career interest in botanical and ornithological subjects, reflecting the broader aesthetic values of Japanese printmaking during the nineteenth century.
