A detailed ukiyo-e triptych by Kikugawa Eizan depicting a summer evening scene on the Sumida River, featuring pleasure boats and the Ryogoku Bridge.
This triptych by Kikugawa Eizan captures the atmosphere of a summer evening at the Ryogoku Bridge in Edo. The scene depicts the popular practice of 'noryo', or cooling off, where residents of the city would gather on the Sumida River to escape the heat. Eizan focuses on groups of women and their attendants navigating the river in small pleasure boats, their movements suggesting a social outing under the night sky.
The composition is divided across three panels, creating a wide panoramic view of the river traffic. In the background, the wooden structure of the Ryogoku Bridge is crowded with spectators, while the dark sky is filled with stars. The artist employs a muted palette, typical of the period, to convey the dim light of the evening. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of Eizan's style, often associated with the bijin-ga tradition of depicting beautiful women.
Eizan was a prolific designer of woodblock prints during the early nineteenth century. His work often explored the lives of urban dwellers in Edo, documenting both the leisure activities of the elite and the daily routines of the common people. This print provides a glimpse into the social habits of the era, showing how the river served as a public space for recreation. The attention to detail in the clothing patterns and the structure of the boats reflects the technical skill required in the ukiyo-e process. By presenting this scene, the artist documents a specific cultural moment, capturing the intersection of urban architecture and human activity in pre-modern Japan.
