Beskrivning
A minimalist lithograph by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, featuring precise geometric lines and balanced forms characteristic of the Bauhaus movement.
Laszlo Moholy-Nagy was a central figure in the Bauhaus movement, known for his exploration of light, space, and industrial materials. This work, titled Construction, demonstrates his interest in geometric reduction and the clarity of form. By stripping away representational elements, Moholy-Nagy focuses on the relationship between line, plane, and negative space.
The composition is defined by a vertical axis that anchors the image, intersected by a series of precise, linear elements. A large, thin arc provides a sense of curvature against the rigid, straight lines of the bars. The inclusion of a solid black semi-circle creates a point of visual weight, contrasting with the lighter, more transparent lines that define the rest of the structure. This balance of weight and transparency is characteristic of his graphic work from the 1920s, where he sought to create a visual language that felt modern and objective.
Moholy-Nagy believed that art should reflect the technological age. His approach to composition often mirrored architectural drafting or engineering diagrams, removing the hand of the artist in favour of a clean, calculated aesthetic. The stark contrast between the black ink and the white paper surface emphasises the purity of the geometric shapes. This print offers a clear example of how the artist utilised basic elements to construct a sense of balance and tension within a two-dimensional plane. It is a study in spatial organisation, where every line serves a specific purpose in defining the overall equilibrium of the piece. The work remains an example of the Bauhaus ethos, where form follows function and simplicity is the primary objective.
