A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Gottlieb Friedrich Riedel, featuring two architectural console designs adorned with classical laurel garlands.
This etching by Gottlieb Friedrich Riedel presents two distinct designs for architectural consoles, or brackets, adorned with classical garlands. Riedel, a German artist active during the mid-eighteenth century, produced numerous pattern books for craftsmen, cabinetmakers, and architects. His work reflects the transition from the fluid, asymmetrical forms of the Rococo period toward the more structured, symmetrical ideals of Neoclassicism.
The print demonstrates a high degree of technical precision, typical of eighteenth-century engraving practices. The left console features a scroll-like form decorated with a draped laurel garland, while the right console incorporates a circular rosette motif and a more elaborate arrangement of hanging foliage. The shading is achieved through fine, parallel lines, which define the volume and depth of the stone or wood carvings they represent. These plates were intended as visual references for artisans, providing templates for the decorative elements found on furniture, fireplaces, and interior wall panelling of the era.
The composition is clean and functional, prioritising clarity for the viewer. By isolating these architectural details against a plain background, Riedel allows the observer to examine the proportions and the specific arrangement of the decorative motifs. The inclusion of the letter 'Z' and the number '3' in the margins suggests this print was part of a larger series or catalogue of designs. This work provides insight into the dissemination of decorative styles in eighteenth-century Europe, where pattern books acted as the primary medium for sharing aesthetic trends across borders. The focus remains on the structural integrity of the console, balanced by the organic, flowing lines of the garlands, creating a harmonious study in classical ornamentation.
