Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, a prominent figure associated with the Bauhaus, produced Composition K IV in 1924. This work reflects his interest in the relationship between light, space, and geometric form. Moholy-Nagy moved away from traditional representation, choosing instead to explore the fundamental elements of visual language: the line, the plane, and the circle.
The composition is characterised by a stark, dark background that provides a neutral field for the floating geometric elements. A vertical white bar dominates the upper portion, suggesting a sense of upward movement or structural stability. Below this, the artist introduces a series of curved and angular shapes, including a semi-circle and a segment containing a red form. These elements appear to hover, creating a sense of weightlessness that was central to the artist's theoretical approach to painting.
Moholy-Nagy often treated the canvas as a space for optical experimentation. By using precise, clean edges and a limited colour palette, he directs the viewer's attention to the balance of the composition. The interaction between the opaque forms and the implied transparency of the overlapping shapes demonstrates his preoccupation with how light interacts with surfaces.
