An eighteenth-century architectural study detailing the design elements of the Turkse Tent in Watergraafsmeer, rendered in ink and watercolour.
This architectural study by Jan Otto documents the design elements of a structure known as the Turkse Tent, formerly located in the Watergraafsmeer area of Amsterdam. The drawing presents a series of elevations and structural details, rendered with precision to communicate the aesthetic and functional components of the pavilion. The composition includes a central arched entrance, decorative lattice panels, and roof structures that reflect the period interest in exoticism and orientalist motifs within Dutch garden architecture.
The draughtsmanship is clean and methodical, typical of eighteenth-century design records. Otto employs thin, controlled ink lines to define the geometry of the arches and the grid of the lattice work. The application of watercolour is restrained, using a palette of soft greens, muted yellows, and pale greys to suggest the intended materials and finishes of the structure. A scale reference is included in the upper left corner, indicating the practical purpose of the sheet as a guide for construction or documentation.
Architectural follies of this nature were common features in the pleasure gardens of wealthy Dutch estates during the eighteenth century. These structures provided a space for leisure and social gathering, often incorporating stylistic elements borrowed from diverse cultures to create a sense of novelty. This specific drawing serves as a record of the ephemeral nature of such garden architecture, capturing the design intent before the physical structure disappeared. The work provides insight into the intersection of garden design and decorative arts, where the structural requirements of a pavilion meet the ornamental preferences of the era. The inclusion of handwritten annotations and measurements further confirms its status as a working document, preserved for its historical value in understanding the built environment of the Watergraafsmeer district.
