The composition reflects the rapid modernisation of Japan, where traditional courtly attire and customs intersect with Western-style military uniforms. The artist, a student of Yoshitoshi, employs the characteristic woodblock techniques of the late nineteenth century, utilising bold outlines and a saturated colour palette to define the figures and their surroundings.
