Beskrivning

A monochrome woodblock print from the Hanabusa Gahon, depicting a guardian lion near a waterfall with expressive, calligraphic line work.

This woodblock print originates from the 'Collected Manual of Paintings' (Hanabusa Gahon), a publication attributed to Hanabusa Ippō. Ippō was a student of Hanabusa Itchō and operated within the artistic traditions of the mid-Edo period. The work displays the characteristic monochrome aesthetic of Japanese woodblock printing, utilising bold, expressive lines to define form and movement.

The composition depicts a shishi, or guardian lion, positioned near a cascading waterfall. The artist employs a calligraphic approach to the ink work, where the weight of the lines shifts to suggest the texture of the lion's mane and the turbulent motion of the water. The scene is divided across two pages, a common format for instructional manuals or illustrated books of the era. The contrast between the solid, dark ink of the lion and the lighter, more fluid strokes of the water creates a sense of dynamic energy.

Such manuals were produced to provide artists and students with models for composition and brush technique. The inclusion of the shishi, a creature derived from Buddhist iconography, reflects the cultural themes prevalent in Japanese art during the eighteenth century. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate brush-and-ink drawings into the woodblock medium, maintaining the spontaneity of the original hand-drawn lines. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a historical document, with the ink retaining its clarity against the toned background. This piece offers a view into the pedagogical methods of the Hanabusa school, where the study of mythological subjects and natural phenomena formed the basis of artistic training.
