A refined woodblock print from the illustrated book Collected Light Verses and Noted Landscapes, featuring Mount Fuji and coastal scenery by Yashima Gakutei.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book titled Collected Light Verses and Noted Landscapes (Sansui kikan kyōka shū), a production associated with the artist Yashima Gakutei. Gakutei was a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, and he became a prominent figure in the creation of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often featuring poetry. This specific work demonstrates the characteristic aesthetic of the period, combining visual depictions of natural scenery with calligraphic text.
The composition presents a dual-page spread typical of Edo-period book design. On the left, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rises above a coastal scene, while the right page focuses on a craggy, pine-covered rock formation. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft washes of colour to define the terrain and foliage. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the technical skill required for woodblock carving during the early nineteenth century. The inclusion of kyōka, or light verse, integrates the literary and visual arts, a common practice among the literati circles of the time.
Unlike the more dramatic, high-contrast prints produced for the mass market, this work possesses a quiet, observational quality. The spatial arrangement relies on traditional Japanese perspective, where depth is suggested through overlapping forms and the placement of elements across the two pages. The paper texture and the visible binding crease provide evidence of its original function as a page within a bound volume. This print offers a view into the intersection of poetry and visual representation in historical Japan, capturing a moment of calm observation through the lens of a master printmaker.
