A refined 1786 etching by Jean-Jacques-François Le Barbier depicting a scene between Clymene and Damon, complete with original French dialogue.
This refined etching and engraving by Jean-Jacques-François Le Barbier dates to 1786. It depicts a scene from a literary work, featuring the characters Clymene and Damon. The composition follows the conventions of late eighteenth-century French book illustration, where narrative clarity and balanced form were paramount.
In the centre, Damon kneels beside a small stone altar, his posture relaxed yet attentive. He holds a tool, suggesting a moment of pause in his labour. Clymene stands to his left, her drapery rendered with fluid, rhythmic lines that echo the natural surroundings. The figures are set within a dense, wooded environment, where the foliage is articulated through precise cross-hatching and varied line weights. The trees frame the figures, creating a sense of enclosure that directs the viewer's eye toward the interaction between the two protagonists.
Below the main image, a cartouche contains the French text: 'Dis-moi mon bien-aimé, que veux tu faire ici de ce petit Autel?' (Tell me my beloved, what do you wish to do here with this little altar?). This inclusion of dialogue within the print itself is characteristic of the period, serving to anchor the visual narrative in a specific literary context. The border surrounding the scene features a decorative rope-like motif, providing a structured finish to the composition.
Le Barbier was a prolific illustrator of his time, known for his ability to translate complex literary themes into accessible visual formats. This work demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium of engraving, particularly in his handling of light and shadow to create volume within the figures and depth within the forest setting. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the Neoclassical era, prioritising order, clarity, and a harmonious relationship between the human figure and the natural world.
