A 1920 American Impressionist oil painting by Willard Metcalf, capturing the crisp light and seasonal colours of the New England countryside.
Closing Autumn, painted in 1920, captures the specific atmospheric conditions of the New England countryside during the transition from late autumn to winter. Willard Metcalf, a central figure in the Ten American Painters group, focused his practice on the observation of light and seasonal change. In this work, the composition is anchored by the verticality of the birch trees, their orange foliage providing a sharp contrast against the deep blue of the river and the muted tones of the distant hills.
Metcalf employs a technique that balances descriptive detail with the looser brushwork characteristic of the Impressionist style. The application of paint is deliberate, allowing the texture of the canvas to interact with the light-filled pigments. The river serves as a reflective surface, mirroring the sky and the surrounding terrain, which creates a sense of depth and spatial clarity. The distant farmhouse, nestled within the valley, provides a sense of human scale to the expansive natural environment.
This painting reflects the artist's deep familiarity with the topography of New England, particularly the areas around Cornish, New Hampshire. Metcalf often returned to similar motifs, refining his approach to colour and light over several decades. The palette is carefully managed, moving from the warm, saturated oranges of the foreground leaves to the cooler, recessive blues and purples of the water and mountains. The work avoids excessive sentimentality, instead offering a precise observation of a fleeting moment in the natural cycle. It remains a representative example of his mature style, where the focus is on the interplay between the physical reality of the scene and the subjective experience of the viewer.
