Beskrivning

A haunting watercolour by Edward Burne-Jones, depicting the tragic lovers from the traditional Scottish ballad, Clerk Saunders.

Clerk Saunders is a watercolour work by Edward Burne-Jones, completed in 1861. The composition draws its subject from a traditional Scottish ballad of the same name, which tells a tragic story of forbidden love and supernatural intervention. Burne-Jones depicts the two lovers in a moment of quiet intimacy, their figures pressed close together in a dimly lit interior. The artist employs a muted, earthy palette, dominated by deep browns and ochres, which creates a sense of enclosure and melancholy.

The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and soft, dreamlike features characteristic of Burne-Jones's mature style. The woman, May Margaret, is shown with her hands held by Clerk Saunders, their expressions conveying a sense of impending loss. The heavy drapery of their garments obscures their forms, adding to the atmospheric weight of the scene. The background is largely indistinct, focusing the viewer's attention on the emotional connection between the two protagonists.

This work reflects the Pre-Raphaelite interest in medieval literature and folklore. Burne-Jones often turned to such sources to explore themes of romantic longing and mortality. The technique of using watercolour on paper allows for a delicate layering of tone, which contributes to the shadowy, ethereal quality of the image. The composition avoids complex spatial depth, opting instead for a flattened, frieze-like arrangement that emphasises the symbolic nature of the encounter. By choosing a moment of stillness before the narrative's violent conclusion, the artist captures the psychological tension inherent in the ballad. The work remains a clear example of the artist's early fascination with the intersection of myth and personal emotion, presented through a lens of aesthetic refinement.

Artist Biography

Edward Burne Jones

Edward Burne-Jones, a leading light of the second wave of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, conjured worlds of myth and legend on canvas. Born in Birmingham, he initially intended to enter the clergy, but his encounter with the art and writings of John Ruskin and Dante Gabriel Rossetti at Oxford sparked a lifelong devotion to art. Burne-Jones's aesthetic, characterised by elongated figures, ethereal beauty, and a dreamlike atmosphere, offered an escape from the industrial realities of Victorian England.

Though closely associated with Rossetti, Burne-Jones forged his own distinct path, drawing inspiration from Arthurian romances, classical mythology, and the burgeoning Symbolist movement. His works, such as 'The Beguiling of Merlin' and 'King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid', are not mere illustrations but rather explorations of complex emotional states and timeless human dramas. He embraced decorative arts, designing stained glass, tapestries, and mosaics, believing in the unity of art and life.

Burne-Jones's influence extended far beyond his own lifetime. His emphasis on beauty, imagination, and the evocative power of art paved the way for the Aesthetic movement and later Symbolist painters. Collecting a Burne-Jones print allows one to bring a touch of medieval romance and ethereal beauty into the everyday, a reminder of the power of art to transport and transform.
