A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the calm shores of Lake Biwa as the weather clears, featuring soft gradients and rhythmic pine trees.
Clearing Weather at Awazu is a woodblock print from the series Eight Views of Omi, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the 1830s. This series draws upon a traditional Chinese theme of eight scenic views, adapted here to the Japanese province of Omi, which surrounds Lake Biwa. The composition captures the serene atmosphere of the shoreline as the weather breaks, revealing the distant mountains under a soft, pale sky.
Hiroshige employs a sophisticated use of bokashi, a technique involving the manual gradation of ink on the woodblock, to create the subtle transition of colour in the sky and the atmospheric haze surrounding the peaks. The foreground features a line of pine trees along the coast, providing a rhythmic visual anchor that guides the eye toward the water. Several sailing vessels are positioned across the lake, their white sails echoing the shapes of the distant mountain slopes. Small figures traverse the path beneath the trees, adding a sense of scale and human presence to the quiet scene.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period publishing industry. The registration of the blocks allows for clean lines and distinct colour areas, while the paper texture remains visible in the printed surface. Hiroshige avoids excessive detail, preferring to suggest the mood of the location through simplified forms and a controlled palette. This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of travel, geography, and atmospheric conditions, themes that appear throughout his career. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner provides context for the specific view, adhering to the conventions of the series. As a fine art print, this piece offers a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the balance between natural observation and graphic design remains the primary objective.
