A detailed 1846 watercolour and graphite study by Johann Jakob Meyer, depicting the church at Tamins and the village of Reichenau in the Swiss Alps.
This watercolour by Johann Jakob Meyer, dated 1846, captures the alpine topography of the Grisons region in Switzerland. The composition focuses on the church at Tamins, positioned on a prominent hill, with the village of Reichenau situated in the valley below. Meyer employs a combination of graphite sketching and light watercolour washes to define the scene. The foreground and peripheral areas remain largely in pencil, showing the artist's initial outlines and structural planning. This unfinished quality provides insight into the working methods of nineteenth-century topographical artists, who often prioritised the accurate recording of geographical features and architectural forms.
The background is dominated by the imposing mass of the mountains, rendered in muted blue and grey tones to suggest atmospheric perspective. The church itself is treated with more detail, its white walls and spire acting as a visual anchor against the darker, textured slopes of the mountain. The river valley, which separates the two settlements, is depicted with subtle washes of green and brown, indicating the meadows and watercourses characteristic of the Swiss landscape.
Meyer was known for his dedication to documenting the Swiss terrain, often producing works that served as records for travellers and local inhabitants. His approach here is methodical, balancing the need for precise architectural representation with the atmospheric conditions of the high altitude. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the site. By leaving sections of the paper blank or merely outlined, the artist reveals the process of building a composition from the ground up, allowing the viewer to observe the transition from line to colour. This piece is a representative example of the mid-nineteenth-century interest in documenting European geography through portable, medium-scale works on paper.
