A serene 1916 oil painting by Gustav Klimt, depicting the village church of Unterach on the Attersee through a mosaic-like, decorative lens.
Painted in 1916, Church in Unterach on the Attersee captures the Austrian village where Gustav Klimt spent his summer holidays. During these periods, Klimt moved away from his characteristic gold-leaf portraiture to focus on the natural surroundings of the Salzkammergut region. The composition is notable for its flattened perspective, which brings the architecture and the water into a single, unified plane.
The church, with its distinctive onion-shaped dome, dominates the upper portion of the canvas. Klimt employs a mosaic-like application of paint, using small, repetitive brushstrokes that create a shimmering effect across the surface. This technique draws inspiration from Pointillism, yet it retains a distinctively decorative quality. The foliage surrounding the buildings is rendered in dense, textured patches of green, while the water reflects the colours of the structures and trees in a series of horizontal, rhythmic bands.
Unlike his earlier allegorical works, this piece demonstrates a direct observation of nature filtered through a highly stylised lens. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interplay of light and colour. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the warm red of the church roof and the cool, reflective blues and greens of the lake. This work provides a clear view into the artist's private practice, where he experimented with composition and colour theory away from the pressures of his commissioned portrait work in Vienna. The result is a calm, structured representation of the Austrian countryside that balances representational accuracy with a modern, decorative sensibility.
