A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Gerard de Jode depicting the biblical scene of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas.
This engraving by the Dutch cartographer and printmaker Gerard de Jode depicts the biblical narrative of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas. The composition centres on the figure of the resurrected Christ, who stands holding a banner while guiding the hand of Thomas toward the wound in his side. The surrounding apostles observe the interaction with varied expressions of contemplation and surprise. The scene is set within a simple architectural interior, which provides a clear stage for the figures to occupy.
De Jode employs a precise engraving technique, using fine lines to define the folds of the drapery and the anatomical details of the figures. The cross-hatching creates subtle shadows, giving the scene a sense of volume despite the relatively shallow space. The inclusion of Latin and French inscriptions at the base of the print identifies the subject matter, a common practice in sixteenth-century print culture to ensure the narrative was accessible to a broad audience. The work reflects the technical standards of the period, where printmaking served as a primary medium for the dissemination of religious imagery and moral instruction.
As a publisher and engraver based in Antwerp, de Jode was active during a period of significant artistic production in the Low Countries. His work often demonstrates a synthesis of local traditions and the influence of Italian Mannerism, particularly in the elongated proportions and dramatic gestures of the figures. This print is a clear example of the graphic output from his workshop, which contributed to the visual literacy of the era. The balanced arrangement of the figures and the clarity of the narrative demonstrate the functional nature of such prints, which were often collected in albums or used for devotional purposes. The print remains a record of the technical skill and thematic concerns prevalent in late sixteenth-century Northern European art.
