A detailed red chalk drawing from 1746 by Louis Fabritius Dubourg, depicting the biblical scene of Christ healing a possessed man.
This work by Louis Fabritius Dubourg, dated 1746, depicts the biblical narrative of Christ healing a possessed man. Executed in red chalk, the drawing demonstrates the artist's command of line and shadow to convey a sense of dramatic tension. The central figure of the possessed man is shown in a state of physical and emotional distress, while the figure of Christ stands to the right, his posture calm and authoritative. The surrounding figures, likely disciples or witnesses, observe the interaction with varied expressions of concern and awe.
Dubourg, a Dutch artist active during the eighteenth century, often drew inspiration from classical and religious themes. His use of red chalk, a medium favoured by many artists of the period for its warmth and ability to suggest soft modelling, allows for a fluid transition between light and dark areas. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to draw the eye toward the interaction between the healer and the afflicted. A palm tree in the background provides a subtle reference to the setting, grounding the scene in a traditional iconographic context.
This piece reflects the stylistic tendencies of the mid-eighteenth century, where artists sought to combine classical order with a more expressive, human approach to religious subjects. The lines are delicate yet purposeful, defining the musculature of the central figure and the folds of the drapery with precision. As a study or finished drawing, it offers a clear view into the artistic process of the era, where the economy of the medium was used to achieve a high degree of narrative clarity. The work remains a representative example of Dubourg's draughtsmanship and his ability to translate complex theological events into accessible visual compositions.
