A striking 1895 woodcut by Dutch artist Mathieu Lauweriks, depicting a stylised, symbolic portrait of Christ being mocked by figures representing the Church and the world.
Mathieu Lauweriks, a significant figure in the Dutch decorative arts and architecture scene, produced this woodcut in 1895. The work, titled 'Christus door Kerk en wereld bespot', reflects the period's fascination with Symbolist themes and the revival of traditional printmaking techniques. Lauweriks was deeply involved in the Theosophical movement, which often informed his aesthetic choices, favouring geometric order and spiritual motifs.
The composition is stark and highly stylised. It features a central, frontal portrait of Christ, his face marked by tears that descend in a decorative, almost heraldic manner. Above his head, a crown of thorns is rendered with sharp, angular lines, set against a dark, radiating background that suggests a halo or a celestial aura. At the base of the image, two small, silhouetted figures represent the Church and the world, engaged in the act of mockery. Their forms are reduced to essential shapes, contrasting with the larger, more detailed visage of Christ.
The woodcut medium dictates the visual language here. Lauweriks employs bold, high-contrast black and white areas, typical of the late nineteenth-century graphic revival. The lines are deliberate and firm, avoiding unnecessary shading to maintain a flat, iconic quality. This approach aligns with the artist's broader interest in the relationship between form, geometry, and religious iconography. By stripping away realistic depth, Lauweriks directs the viewer toward the symbolic weight of the subject matter. The work remains a clear example of the Dutch Symbolist graphic tradition, where the artist sought to convey spiritual concepts through simplified, powerful imagery rather than narrative realism. The print is signed and dated by the artist in the lower margin, confirming its status as a deliberate, finished graphic statement from his early career.
