A detailed 17th-century engraving by Léonard Gaultier depicting Christ with his disciples, set against a backdrop of a fortified town and river.
This engraving by the French printmaker Léonard Gaultier depicts a biblical scene where Christ instructs his disciples. Gaultier, active in Paris during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, produced a vast body of work, often focusing on religious and historical subjects. His technique reflects the precise, controlled lines characteristic of the period, where the burin was used to create depth through cross-hatching and varied line weight.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, Christ stands as the central figure, surrounded by a group of disciples. Their garments are rendered with flowing, heavy folds that suggest movement and weight. The figures are positioned in a shallow space, typical of the Mannerist approach to narrative art, where the focus remains on the interaction between the characters rather than strict spatial realism.
In the background, Gaultier presents a detailed view of a fortified town situated near a body of water. Small boats populate the river, adding a sense of scale and activity to the scene. The rolling hills and distant structures are etched with fine, delicate lines, providing a contrast to the more robust figures in the foreground. The artist's signature, L. Gaultier fecit, is visible in the lower right corner, confirming his authorship of this plate.
This work demonstrates the technical skill required for early modern printmaking. The balance between the narrative focus on the figures and the atmospheric background shows Gaultier's ability to manage complex compositions within a single frame. The print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the period, where religious narratives were disseminated through accessible, high-quality engravings for a wider audience.
