A detailed pen and wash drawing by Hendrik de Clerck, depicting the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Saint Francis.
This drawing by Hendrik de Clerck depicts the Crucifixion, a subject frequently explored by Flemish artists during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. De Clerck, a painter active in Brussels, was known for his work within the court of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. His style reflects the transition from the elongated, expressive forms of Mannerism towards the more structured compositions that would define the early Baroque period in the Southern Netherlands.
The composition centres on the figure of Christ on the cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. At the base of the cross, Saint Francis kneels in a gesture of devotion. The artist employs pen and brown ink with wash to create depth and volume, using light to define the figures against a distant, sketchily rendered cityscape. The inclusion of the sun and moon in the upper corners is a traditional iconographic element, often used to signify the cosmic significance of the event.
De Clerck demonstrates a mastery of line and shadow in this study. The drapery of the figures is rendered with fluid, calligraphic strokes, typical of the period's graphic output. The work functions as a preparatory study or a finished drawing intended for a collector, showcasing the artist's ability to balance emotional narrative with technical precision. The figures possess a characteristic elegance, with elongated proportions and expressive gestures that draw the viewer into the scene. This piece provides insight into the devotional practices and artistic techniques of the Flemish school during a period of religious and political change in Brussels.
