A detailed 19th-century engraving depicting the arrest of Christ, based on a composition by the Nazarene painter Friedrich Overbeck.
This engraving, titled 'Jesus Ligatus ad Principem Sacerdotum Ducitur', depicts a scene from the Passion of Christ. It is based on an original composition by Friedrich Overbeck, a central figure of the Nazarene movement. Heinrich Nüsser, a German engraver, translated Overbeck's linear and austere style into this precise print format. The work captures the moment Christ is forcibly led by guards toward the house of the High Priest.
The composition follows the stylistic tenets of the Nazarene school, which sought to revive the clarity and moral seriousness of early Renaissance art. The figures are arranged with a focus on narrative legibility, using clear outlines and a balanced distribution of weight across the frame. The lighting is theatrical, provided by a lantern held by one of the guards, which casts long shadows and defines the forms of the figures against the architectural backdrop.
Nüsser employs a disciplined technique of cross-hatching and fine line work to model the drapery and the musculature of the figures. The scene avoids excessive ornamentation, keeping the viewer's attention on the central action and the expressions of the participants. The architectural elements, such as the archway in the background, provide a sense of spatial depth without distracting from the primary subject. This print reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in devotional art that prioritised historical accuracy and a return to traditional Christian iconography. It is a representative example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers during this period, where the print served to disseminate religious imagery to a wider audience.
