Painted between 1849 and 1850, this work by John Everett Millais is a defining example of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's approach to religious art. The scene depicts the Holy Family within a working carpenter's shop, a departure from the idealised, ethereal settings common in traditional academic painting of the period. Millais utilised real carpenters as models for the figures, ensuring that the physical details of the workshop, including the wood shavings on the floor and the tools, possess a tangible, grounded quality.

The composition is tightly packed, focusing on the young Christ, who has injured his hand on a nail. This detail serves as a prefiguration of the Crucifixion. The Virgin Mary kneels to comfort him, while Joseph tends to the wound. Other figures, including the young John the Baptist, contribute to the narrative density of the scene. The painting is notable for its rejection of the dark, murky tones favoured by the Royal Academy at the time, opting instead for a bright, clear palette that draws attention to the minute details of the figures and the environment.

Upon its initial exhibition, the work provoked significant controversy. Critics found the realistic portrayal of the Holy Family, particularly the depiction of the Virgin Mary, to be unrefined and lacking in the expected decorum. Charles Dickens famously described the figures as possessing a repulsive quality. Despite this reception, the painting remains a primary example of the movement's desire to return to the sincerity and direct observation found in art produced before the influence of Raphael. The meticulous attention to texture, from the grain of the timber to the folds of the garments, demonstrates the technical rigour that Millais applied to his work during this period.
