A late work by Eugène Delacroix, this painting depicts a vulnerable, exhausted Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane through expressive brushwork and deep, moody tones.
Eugène Delacroix painted this work in 1861, near the end of his career. It depicts the biblical scene of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, a subject that allowed the artist to explore themes of isolation and human suffering. Unlike traditional depictions that focus on the divine nature of the figure, Delacroix presents a man overcome by exhaustion and emotional weight. The figure of Christ is sprawled upon the earth, his body language suggesting a state of total collapse rather than prayerful meditation.
The composition relies on the contrast between the illuminated figure and the surrounding darkness. Delacroix uses a palette of deep greens, earthy browns, and a striking red garment to anchor the viewer's attention. The brushwork is loose and expressive, characteristic of his later style, where the physical application of paint conveys the psychological tension of the scene. The background is obscured by heavy shadows, suggesting the dense foliage of the garden while keeping the focus entirely on the central figure.
Delacroix was a central figure in the French Romantic movement, known for his interest in colour theory and emotional intensity. This painting reflects his move away from the rigid academic standards of his time, favouring instead a more personal and subjective interpretation of religious narratives. The work captures a moment of quiet, internal struggle, stripped of grandiosity or theatricality. It remains a study of human vulnerability, rendered with the technical mastery that defined his final years. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers, France.
