A medieval manuscript illumination depicting Christ in Glory surrounded by the four symbols of the Evangelists.
This manuscript illumination depicts the traditional iconography of Christ in Majesty, or Christ in Glory. The central figure of Christ sits within a mandorla, a pointed oval frame representing the intersection of heaven and earth. He holds a book inscribed with the Alpha and Omega, signifying the beginning and the end. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, a standard feature in Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine-influenced religious art of the medieval period.
Surrounding the mandorla are the four symbols of the Evangelists, known as the Tetramorph. These figures represent the authors of the Gospels: the angel for Matthew, the eagle for John, the lion for Mark, and the ox for Luke. Each figure is positioned in a corner of the rectangular frame, creating a balanced, symmetrical composition. The border features a repetitive, stylised foliate pattern, which provides a decorative frame for the central theological scene.
While the filename suggests a Novgorod origin, the stylistic execution shares characteristics with broader medieval manuscript traditions that absorbed Byzantine visual language. The use of bold outlines and a clear, flattened perspective is typical of the period, where the goal was to communicate spiritual truths rather than achieve naturalistic representation. The palette relies on earth tones, deep blues, and warm ochres, which were common pigments available to monastic scribes and illuminators of the time. The work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship involved in the production of liturgical texts, where every page was treated as a space for devotion. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate arrangement of the figures ensure that the theological message remains the primary focus for the viewer, reflecting the disciplined approach of medieval religious art.
