A fine etching and engraving by Luigi Schiavonetti, depicting Christ holding the keys of hell and death, originally created for Robert Blair's poem, The Grave.
This print, titled Christ Descending into the Grave, is an etching and engraving by the Italian artist Luigi Schiavonetti. It was produced for the 1808 edition of Robert Blair's poem, The Grave, which featured illustrations designed by William Blake. Schiavonetti was commissioned to translate Blake's visionary watercolours into a format suitable for mass reproduction, a task that required technical precision and a sympathetic understanding of the original compositions.
The image depicts a central figure of Christ, rendered with a calm, authoritative presence. He stands upon a stone staircase, his arms extended to hold the keys of hell and death. Below his feet, flames lick at the steps, suggesting the descent into the underworld. The figure is draped in a simple, flowing garment that reflects the Neoclassical aesthetic prevalent in early nineteenth-century British printmaking. The composition is symmetrical and balanced, with the figure framed by two vertical architectural elements that provide a sense of depth and stability.
Schiavonetti's technique is characterised by fine, controlled lines that define the musculature of the figure and the texture of the drapery. The shading is achieved through delicate cross-hatching, which creates a subtle range of tones across the surface of the print. The inclusion of the original poetic inscription at the base of the image provides context for the scene, linking the visual representation directly to the literary source material. This work is a fine example of the collaborative nature of book illustration during the Romantic period, where the skills of the engraver were essential to the dissemination of artistic ideas. The print remains a clear record of the aesthetic dialogue between Blake's imaginative designs and the refined technical standards of the era's master engravers.
