The golden haloes are applied with a decorative sensibility, reflecting the lingering influence of earlier devotional traditions within the Venetian school.

The soldiers positioned near the gate provide a contrast to the mourning group, establishing a tension between the secular authority and the sacred subject. The landscape elements, including the distant hills and structures, are painted with a degree of stylisation that directs the viewer's attention back to the primary action in the foreground.
