A dramatic religious scene by Aert de Gelder, depicting the trial of Christ through the use of chiaroscuro and expressive brushwork.
Aert de Gelder, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this work during the final phase of his career. The painting depicts the biblical trial of Christ before the high priest Caiaphas. De Gelder employs a muted, earthy palette, characteristic of his later style, to construct a scene defined by dramatic light and shadow. The composition is structured around a grand architectural interior, where the figures are placed within a cavernous, dimly lit hall.
Christ stands in the centre, illuminated by a soft, ethereal light that separates him from the surrounding figures. To the right, Caiaphas is seated, gesturing towards the accused. The architecture, featuring heavy columns and a sweeping staircase, creates a sense of depth and scale. De Gelder uses loose, expressive brushwork to define the forms, prioritising the emotional weight of the narrative over precise anatomical detail. The figures in the background are rendered with minimal definition, allowing the viewer to focus on the central confrontation.
This work reflects the influence of Rembrandt, particularly in the handling of light and the focus on human drama. De Gelder was one of the few artists who continued to work in the style of the late Rembrandt well into the eighteenth century. The painting avoids the polished finish favoured by many of his contemporaries, opting instead for a tactile quality that brings a sense of immediacy to the scene. The sombre atmosphere is maintained throughout, with the light source appearing to emanate from within the space itself rather than from an external window. This approach creates a quiet, contemplative mood, typical of De Gelder's religious subjects. The work is currently held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
