A detailed 1594 engraving by Raffaello Guidi depicting the mystical encounter between Christ and Saint Catherine of Siena.
This engraving by Raffaello Guidi depicts the mystical union of Saint Catherine of Siena with Christ. The composition is based on an invention by Ventura Salimbeni, a Sienese painter active during the late sixteenth century. Guidi, a skilled printmaker, translates the dramatic narrative into a series of precise lines and tonal variations, capturing the spiritual intensity of the encounter.
Saint Catherine is shown kneeling, her posture conveying devotion as she reaches toward Christ. The figure of Christ stands before her, his form rendered with anatomical clarity and a sense of movement. The drapery of their garments is handled with technical proficiency, creating volume and depth through dense cross-hatching. The architectural setting, featuring classical columns and steps, provides a structured backdrop that directs the viewer's focus to the central interaction.
In the lower foreground, a small sprig of flowers lies on the ground, a detail that adds a touch of naturalism to the scene. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the event, identifying the figures and the nature of their mystical exchange. The print demonstrates the technical rigour of Italian engraving during the transition into the Baroque period, where clarity of form and emotional expression were prioritised. Guidi's work reflects the period's interest in religious iconography, often produced to disseminate devotional imagery to a wider audience. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, is achieved entirely through the density of the engraved lines, demonstrating the artist's command over the copper plate. This piece is a fine example of the collaborative relationship between painters and printmakers in the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras, where the print served to codify and distribute the visual language of the Church.
