A refined portrait of a seated woman by the Japanese Bunjinga artist Yokoi Kinkoku, dating to 1809.
Yokoi Kinkoku, a monk and painter associated with the Bunjinga tradition, produced this depiction of a Chinese beauty during the Edo period. The work displays the characteristic synthesis of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and Chinese subject matter common to the literati style. The figure is seated upon a low, red-lacquered table, a common motif in depictions of historical or legendary figures from the continent. Her posture is relaxed, with her gaze directed downward, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation.
The artist employs a controlled line quality to define the folds of the subject's robes, which are rendered in muted tones of green and brown. The colour palette remains restrained, allowing the subtle textures of the silk support to contribute to the overall visual effect. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the central space, framed by the geometric lines of the furniture.
Kinkoku was known for his unconventional life as a wandering monk, and his artistic output often reflects a personal, expressive approach to traditional themes. This particular piece demonstrates his ability to handle delicate details, such as the ornamentation in the subject's hair and the patterned fabric of her undergarment. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left quadrant provides context, identifying the work as a product of the autumn season in the year 1809. The mounting, featuring a decorative textile border, is typical of the hanging scroll format used for such works in Japan. This print captures the original silk texture and the specific colour values of the pigments used by Kinkoku, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the subtle interplay between the figure and the sparse background.
