A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, depicting a child reaching for a fishbowl held by an adult in patterned robes.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga captures a domestic scene rendered in the urushi-e style, a technique where hand-applied pigments and sometimes lacquer were used to create depth and texture. Shigenaga, a teacher to several prominent artists of the period, was known for his experimentation with perspective and his contribution to the development of the Ukiyo-e genre in Edo-period Japan.
The composition features an adult figure, likely a mother or attendant, holding a small, spherical fishbowl aloft. A young child stands below, arms raised in anticipation, reaching towards the vessel. The figures are adorned in patterned robes, with the artist employing a variety of motifs that reflect the fashion and aesthetic sensibilities of the time. The lines are precise and calligraphic, characteristic of the early eighteenth-century printmaking tradition. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted reds, and black ink to define the forms against a neutral paper background.
Shigenaga often incorporated text into his designs, as seen here with the calligraphic elements integrated into the composition. These prints were produced for a growing urban audience, offering glimpses into both the idealised and everyday lives of the people of Edo. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative pattern with human gesture. The focus remains on the interaction between the two figures, creating a sense of quiet narrative. As an example of early Ukiyo-e, this print provides insight into the technical and stylistic foundations that would later inform the more widely recognised full-colour prints of the late eighteenth century. The work is a study in balance, where the weight of the adult figure is offset by the dynamic, upward reach of the child, creating a harmonious visual rhythm.
