A seminal Dada work by Kurt Schwitters, combining oil paint and collage to transform everyday found objects into a structured, abstract composition.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, developed his own aesthetic practice known as Merz. This term, derived from a fragment of the word Kommerz (commerce), describes his method of assembling discarded materials into new compositions. Cherry Picture (Das Kirschbild) is a primary example of this approach, where the artist integrates oil paint with various found objects, including paper scraps, fabric, and printed ephemera.
The composition is anchored by a central, incongruous image of cherries, which provides a representational contrast to the surrounding abstract arrangement of geometric planes and textures. Schwitters manipulates these disparate elements to create a sense of spatial depth, despite the inherent flatness of the collage materials. The palette is dominated by muted blues, greens, and earthy tones, which serve to unify the diverse textures of the wood, paper, and paint. By elevating everyday refuse to the status of fine art, Schwitters questions the traditional boundaries of artistic production.
This work reflects the post-war European climate, where artists sought to dismantle conventional notions of beauty and order. The inclusion of commercial labels and fragments of text suggests a dialogue with the urban environment and the rapid industrialisation of the early twentieth century. The work is not merely a collection of objects, but a deliberate construction that balances chaos with structural rigour. The juxtaposition of the delicate, illustrative cherries against the rough, weathered surfaces of the collage creates a tension that is characteristic of Schwitters's output during this period. His ability to organise these fragments into a coherent visual field demonstrates his technical precision and his rejection of traditional academic painting methods.
