This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunchô belongs to the series Choicest Odes upon Flowers of the Four Seasons. The composition depicts a group of figures enjoying a spring outing beneath blooming cherry trees. Shunchô, a student of Katsukawa Shunshô, was known for his refined depictions of women, often referred to as bijin-ga. His style is characterised by slender figures and a graceful, rhythmic arrangement of forms.
The scene captures a moment of leisure in the Edo period. Several women are shown in various states of repose and movement, accompanied by a young attendant carrying a parasol. The artist uses a delicate palette of soft pinks, muted greens, and earthy tones to evoke the atmosphere of the season. The cherry blossoms, rendered with subtle colour, provide a gentle backdrop to the human activity. The figures are dressed in patterned kimonos, which demonstrate the fashion of the time. The print reflects the cultural practice of hanami, or flower viewing, which was a popular social activity during the eighteenth century.
