A haunting abstract composition from 1946, featuring fluid, calligraphic lines and subtle colour accents against a monochromatic, atmospheric background.
Arshile Gorky created Charred Beloved II in 1946, a period marked by personal trauma and physical decline. The work is part of a series that emerged following a studio fire which destroyed many of his earlier paintings. The title reflects this loss, suggesting a transformation of his previous artistic identity through the medium of fire and memory.
The composition is characterised by thin, calligraphic lines that float across a muted, atmospheric ground. Gorky employs a technique of layering washes of grey and charcoal tones, creating a sense of depth that feels both ethereal and grounded. Within this nebulous space, distinct biomorphic shapes emerge. These forms are not representational in a traditional sense, yet they evoke organic structures, anatomical fragments, or perhaps remnants of the artist's own past.
Small, deliberate accents of colour, specifically red and yellow, punctuate the monochromatic field. These flashes of pigment draw the eye to specific intersections of line and shadow, providing a contrast to the otherwise sombre palette. The application of paint is fluid, with areas of transparency allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible. This approach emphasises the physical process of painting, where the act of mark-making becomes a record of the artist's psychological state.
Unlike the more aggressive gestures found in later Abstract Expressionist works, Gorky's approach here is measured and lyrical. He balances the spontaneity of his line work with a controlled distribution of tone. The result is a composition that invites quiet observation, where the viewer is left to navigate the ambiguous relationship between the forms and the void they inhabit. It is a work that captures a moment of transition, documenting the artist's attempt to reconcile his history with the uncertainty of his present circumstances.
