A refined eighteenth-century portrait engraving by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, depicting the influential French academician Charles-Nicolas Cochin in profile.
This portrait depicts Charles-Nicolas Cochin, a figure of considerable influence within the French artistic establishment during the eighteenth century. As the Secrétaire Perpétuel of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Cochin held a position that allowed him to shape the aesthetic direction of the period. Augustin de Saint-Aubin, a master of the graphic arts, captures his subject in profile, a format that emphasises the sitter's features and formal attire.
The composition is presented within a trompe-l'oeil oval frame, suspended by a ribbon, which rests upon a stone-effect plinth. This architectural framing device is characteristic of the period's printmaking, providing a sense of gravity and permanence to the portrait. The inscription on the plinth identifies the sitter and his titles, confirming his status as a Chevalier de l'Ordre du Roi. Saint-Aubin employs a refined technique of etching and engraving, using delicate cross-hatching to model the contours of the face and the texture of the wig. The precision of the line work reflects the technical standards of the French school of engraving, where clarity and tonal balance were prioritised.
Saint-Aubin was known for his ability to render the likenesses of his contemporaries with both accuracy and a degree of stylistic grace. This print is a record of the intellectual and artistic circles of pre-revolutionary France. The work functions as a document of the professional identity of the sitter, presenting him not merely as an individual, but as a representative of the institutional power he held. The monochromatic palette and the focus on linear detail allow the viewer to appreciate the craftsmanship involved in the production of such portraiture, which served as a primary method for disseminating the images of public figures before the advent of photography.
