A formal portrait engraving of Charles Maurice Le Tellier, Archbishop of Reims, executed by Claude Duflos after a painting by Pierre Mignard.
This engraving by Claude Duflos depicts Charles Maurice Le Tellier, the Archbishop of Reims, a figure of significant ecclesiastical and political standing in late seventeenth-century France. The portrait is based on an original painting by Pierre Mignard, dated 1692, which Duflos translated into the medium of print in 1705. The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture common to the period, presenting the subject within an oval frame that suggests a sculptural niche.
Duflos employs precise line work to render the textures of the Archbishop's clerical vestments and the soft curls of his hair. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates a sense of volume and depth, particularly in the shadows surrounding the subject. The inclusion of the coat of arms at the base of the oval frame serves to identify the sitter's rank and lineage, a standard practice in aristocratic portraiture of the era. The Latin inscription encircling the oval provides the formal titles of the Archbishop, reinforcing his authority.
As a printmaker, Duflos was known for his technical skill in reproducing the works of contemporary painters. This print demonstrates his ability to maintain the character of Mignard's original composition while adapting it to the linear language of engraving. The work offers a clear view of the formal dress and personal appearance of a high-ranking member of the French clergy during the reign of Louis XIV. The balanced composition and controlled use of light and shadow reflect the aesthetic priorities of the French Baroque, where clarity and order were valued in the representation of public figures. This print remains a record of both the sitter and the collaborative process between painter and engraver in the early eighteenth century.
