A delicate Mannerist study of the goddess Ceres, rendered in pen and brown ink by the Italian artist Lelio Orsi.
This drawing by Lelio Orsi depicts the Roman goddess Ceres, traditionally associated with agriculture and the harvest. Orsi, a painter and architect active in the Emilia-Romagna region, is known for his idiosyncratic approach to the Mannerist style. His work often incorporates elongated proportions and a sense of theatricality, which are present in the fluid, expressive handling of the figure here.
The composition focuses on the goddess as she holds a sheaf of wheat, her gaze directed upwards. Orsi employs a combination of pen and brown ink with wash to define the drapery of her garments. The lines are calligraphic, showing the artist's confidence in capturing movement and volume through minimal means. A faint, secondary sketch of a figure appears in the upper left, providing insight into the artist's process of refining the primary subject. The paper retains the warm, aged tone typical of sixteenth-century Italian drawings, which complements the sepia ink used for the figure.
Orsi's style is distinct from the more rigid classicism of his contemporaries. He often experimented with light and shadow to create a sense of drama, even in small-scale studies. This piece reflects his ability to imbue mythological subjects with a personal, almost ethereal quality. The lack of a complex background ensures that the viewer's attention remains on the posture and the delicate rendering of the goddess. As a study, it offers a direct connection to the artist's hand, revealing the preparatory stages of his larger decorative projects. The work is a representative example of the graphic output from the Emilian school during the mid-sixteenth century, demonstrating the technical proficiency required for such fluid, spontaneous mark-making.
