A refined 1778 mezzotint by James Watson, after Sir Joshua Reynolds, depicting Catherine Bunbury in a contemplative, classical pose.
This mezzotint by James Watson, published in 1778, reproduces the portrait of Catherine Bunbury originally painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Watson was a highly skilled engraver of the eighteenth century, known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the tonal medium of mezzotint. The technique relies on the roughening of a copper plate to create a range of light and shadow, which allows for the soft, atmospheric transitions seen in the drapery and the background of this print.
Catherine Bunbury is depicted in a contemplative pose, resting her chin upon her hand. Her attire reflects the fashion of the period, with an elaborate hairstyle and flowing garments that suggest a sense of ease. The composition includes a stone ledge and a glimpse of a distant, simplified view, which provides a sense of depth behind the sitter. The heavy velvet-like curtain draped behind her adds a theatrical element to the scene, a common device in portraiture of the era to provide a sense of grandeur.
As a printmaker, Watson worked closely with the leading painters of his time, including Reynolds, to disseminate their work to a wider audience. This print captures the specific textures of the fabric and the subtle play of light across the sitter's face, demonstrating the technical precision required for high-quality mezzotint production. The work remains a fine example of the collaborative relationship between the painter and the engraver in the Georgian period, where the print served as a primary means of viewing contemporary portraiture outside of private collections.
