A detailed architectural watercolour by Giacomo Quarenghi, depicting the historic Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin in the late eighteenth century.
Giacomo Quarenghi, an Italian architect who spent much of his career in the service of the Russian imperial court, produced this detailed architectural view of the Cathedral Square in the Moscow Kremlin. The composition captures the distinct juxtaposition of Russian Orthodox ecclesiastical architecture with the orderly, measured perspective characteristic of the Neoclassical tradition. Quarenghi was known for his precise draughtsmanship, and this work demonstrates his ability to document complex urban spaces with clarity.
The scene features the Ivan the Great Bell Tower on the right, standing as a vertical anchor against the horizontal massing of the surrounding cathedrals. The Dormition Cathedral and the Cathedral of the Archangel are visible, their golden domes rendered with subtle washes of yellow and ochre. The artist employs a muted palette of greys, soft browns, and pale blues, which allows the architectural forms to remain the primary focus. Small figures populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale to the monumental structures. These figures are depicted in contemporary dress, suggesting a snapshot of daily life within the Kremlin walls during the late eighteenth century.
Quarenghi’s training in Rome under Anton Raphael Mengs and his study of Palladian principles inform the structured layout of this piece. The use of ink outlines defines the edges of the stone masonry, while the watercolour application provides depth to the sky and shadows. The inclusion of lettered markers (A, B, C, D) suggests that this work may have served as a reference or an illustrative plate for a larger architectural survey or travelogue. This print offers a view into the historical appearance of the Kremlin, documenting the site before the extensive modifications of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
