A preparatory study for the iconic Stoclet Frieze, this work displays Gustav Klimt's mastery of rhythmic line, geometric pattern, and symbolic form.
This work is a preparatory drawing for the Stoclet Frieze, a commission for the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Gustav Klimt designed this cycle between 1905 and 1909, working closely with the architect Josef Hoffmann. The frieze represents one of the most complete examples of the total work of art concept, or Gesamtkunstwerk, which defined the Vienna Secession movement.
The composition features a stylised tree with sweeping, spiral branches that fill the background. These golden, rhythmic lines create a sense of movement across the surface. The tree itself is constructed from geometric triangles in shades of green, interspersed with circular white floral motifs. The flat, decorative treatment of the subject reflects Klimt's interest in Byzantine mosaics and Japanese woodblock prints. By removing traditional perspective, the artist creates a graphic, two-dimensional space that prioritises pattern over naturalistic representation.
Klimt used gouache, watercolour, and pencil to map out the complex design before it was translated into the final marble and glass mosaic. The drawing reveals his meticulous approach to composition, where every element is balanced to fit the architectural constraints of the dining room walls. The inclusion of small, delicate butterflies and floral shapes adds a layer of symbolic meaning, often associated with the cycle of life and renewal. Klimt’s most iconic works, including The Kiss, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, and The Tree of Life, exemplify his unique approach to the human form, celebrating beauty, femininity, and eroticism with bold lines and richly layered textures. His so-called "Golden Phase," marked by the use of gold and silver leaf, was heavily inspired by Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna.
