A refined enamel miniature portrait of Queen Caroline of Ansbach by the celebrated court artist Christian Friedrich Zincke.
This portrait miniature depicts Caroline of Ansbach, Queen consort of George II of Great Britain. Executed by the German-born artist Christian Friedrich Zincke, the work demonstrates the technical precision required for enamel painting on copper. Zincke was a master of this medium, having moved to London in 1706 where he became a favoured artist for the British aristocracy and the royal court.
The subject is shown in profile, a common convention for portrait miniatures of the period. Her features are rendered with fine, controlled brushwork, capturing the soft texture of her skin and the elaborate styling of her powdered hair. She wears a garment adorned with ermine, a traditional symbol of royal status, which provides a contrast to the muted, neutral background. The use of enamel allows for a smooth, luminous finish that has preserved the clarity of the colours over nearly three centuries.
Zincke was known for his ability to produce small-scale works that maintained the dignity and presence of larger oil portraits. His technique involved multiple firings in a kiln, which fixed the pigments to the copper plate. This process ensured the durability of the image, making such miniatures highly portable and suitable for personal keepsakes or jewellery. The oval format, typical of the era, frames the subject closely, directing the viewer's attention to the regal poise of the Queen. This piece provides a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the Georgian court, where the demand for refined, intimate portraiture was high. The work remains a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by enamel painters in the early eighteenth century.
