Carnforth stretches across Lancashire fields beneath a rainbow, where pale town roofs and a slender spire meet the green hills beyond this railway town's quieter countryside edge.
The Lancashire town of Carnforth is closely associated with the railway and the film Brief Encounter. Much of the 1945 drama was filmed at its station, which retains period features and now provides a destination for visitors following the story of the film.
Here the view leaves the platforms for open green fields bordered by trees. Pale houses form a long band across the middle distance, with a narrow spire rising towards the right. A rainbow crosses the blue, cloud-filled sky above softly rounded hills. White verge flowers and a dense canopy suggest summer, while broken sunlight brings alternating warmth and shade to the near pasture.
