A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by René Lochon, depicting Cardinal César d'Estrées with his heraldic coat of arms.
This engraving by René Lochon depicts Cardinal César d'Estrées, a figure of significant ecclesiastical and political standing in seventeenth-century France. Lochon, a French engraver active in Paris, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period through his use of cross-hatching and fine line work to define the textures of the subject's clerical vestments and the soft modelling of his features.
The portrait is presented within a classic oval frame, a common convention for formal portraiture of the era. Below the oval, the inclusion of the Cardinal's heraldic coat of arms, complete with the ecclesiastical hat and tassels, provides a clear visual indicator of his rank and lineage. The inscription at the base of the oval identifies the original painter, N. Bellot, whose work served as the basis for this print. Lochon's ability to translate the tonal qualities of a painted original into the monochromatic medium of engraving is evident in the subtle transitions of light across the face and the collar.
César d'Estrées was a member of the Académie Française and served as a diplomat, representing French interests in Rome. This print captures the formal, composed nature of high-ranking officials during the reign of Louis XIV. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the sitter's direct gaze and the symbols of his office. As a fine art print, this work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the French Baroque, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting status and identity. The clarity of the lines and the preservation of the original heraldic details make this a representative example of seventeenth-century printmaking techniques, suitable for those interested in historical portraiture and the development of European engraving.
