Martiros Saryan, a central figure in Armenian modernism, produced this work during his formative travels through the Middle East. The painting depicts a desert scene, characterised by a rhythmic arrangement of camels moving across a vast, arid expanse. Saryan employs a palette of ochre, dusty pink, and deep blue, which captures the intense light and shadow of the desert environment.

The composition is structured in horizontal bands, separating the foreground, the mid-ground, and the distant mountain range. This layering creates a sense of immense space, while the simplified forms of the animals and the terrain reflect the influence of Fauvism. Saryan avoids excessive detail, preferring instead to focus on the interplay of colour and the decorative quality of the scene. The camels in the foreground are rendered with soft, rounded contours, contrasting with the sharper, angular peaks of the mountains in the background.

Saryan's approach to the subject is observational yet stylised. He does not seek to replicate the desert with photographic precision, but rather to convey the atmosphere and the slow, steady pace of the caravan. The work is part of a series of paintings created following his journeys to Egypt, Turkey, and Persia between 1910 and 1913. These travels allowed him to move away from the academic traditions of his training in Moscow, leading him toward a more personal, expressive use of colour and form. The resulting image is a study in balance, where the stillness of the resting camels meets the movement of those traversing the plains. It remains a representative example of his early twentieth-century output, reflecting his interest in the light and culture of the East.
