A seventeenth-century etching by Jean Moncornet depicting two stock characters from the Commedia dell'arte in a theatrical encounter.
This etching captures a scene from the Commedia dell'arte, a form of professional theatre that originated in Italy during the sixteenth century. The composition features two stock characters: the braggart soldier, Capitano, and a wealthy, aristocratic figure. The artist, Jean Moncornet, employs a clear, linear style typical of seventeenth-century printmaking to delineate the exaggerated postures and costumes of these performers.
Capitano is depicted on the right, wearing a plumed hat, a ruff, and a doublet, striking a dynamic pose that suggests his characteristic bluster and bravado. Opposite him stands the wealthy man, dressed in the elaborate fashion of the period, complete with a long wig, a frock coat, and a cane. The interaction between the two figures is defined by their contrasting gestures, which convey the social tension and comedic potential inherent in the Commedia dell'arte tradition. The figures are set against a plain background, allowing the viewer to focus on the details of their attire and the theatricality of their movements.
Moncornet, a French engraver and publisher active in Paris, produced numerous prints documenting the costumes and characters of his time. This work provides a window into the visual culture of the mid-seventeenth century, where the theatre served as a primary source of entertainment and social commentary. The etching technique allows for precise rendering of fabric textures and facial expressions, capturing the essence of the performance. This print is a fine example of how historical theatre was documented and disseminated through the medium of engraving, preserving the ephemeral nature of stage performance for a wider audience.
