This work, attributed to the artist known as Pseudo Jan Wellens de Cock, represents the distinctive style of early sixteenth-century Flemish painting. The composition follows the traditional narrative of the road to Calvary, yet it incorporates the characteristic Mannerist tendencies of the period, including elongated figures and a panoramic, atmospheric background. The scene is divided into two distinct zones: the foreground, crowded with soldiers and onlookers, and the distant hill where the crosses are positioned.

The artist employs a high horizon line, a common feature in Northern Renaissance works, which allows for a detailed depiction of the surrounding topography. The rocky outcrops and the distant city architecture reflect the influence of Joachim Patinir, who was instrumental in developing the world-view style of painting. The figures in the foreground exhibit a variety of expressive, almost grotesque facial features, which were typical of the Antwerp Mannerist school. Their clothing, rendered with attention to texture and colour, provides a sense of period detail.

In the lower right, the figures of the Virgin Mary and other holy women are grouped in a more static, contemplative manner, contrasting with the chaotic movement of the soldiers and the condemned figures in the centre. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the brighter reds and blues of the garments, which guide the viewer's eye across the busy composition.
