A delicate Nihonga painting by Ikeda Shōen depicting a mother teaching her child the art of calligraphy.
Ikeda Shōen was a prominent female artist during the Meiji and Taisho periods, known for her contributions to the Nihonga style. This work depicts a quiet domestic scene: a mother guiding her young child through the traditional practice of calligraphy. The figures are rendered with the soft, refined lines characteristic of the Bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the grace of women in daily life.
The composition is set against a muted gold background, a common feature in Japanese screen painting that provides a sense of warmth and timelessness. The mother wears a dark, patterned kimono, while the child is dressed in a smaller, similarly decorated garment. Their posture is focused, with the mother leaning over to assist the child with the brush. A small toy horse lies on the floor nearby, suggesting a brief pause in play for the sake of education. The attention to the texture of the fabric and the delicate facial features demonstrates Shōen's technical skill.
Shōen studied under Mizuno Toshikata and was one of the few women to achieve professional recognition in the male-dominated art circles of early twentieth-century Japan. Her work often captures moments of intimacy and social expectation. This piece reflects the cultural value placed on literacy and the transmission of traditional skills between generations. The use of a two-panel screen format allows for a balanced arrangement of the figures, creating a sense of harmony within the frame. The subtle colour palette, dominated by earth tones and soft accents, ensures the focus remains on the interaction between the two figures rather than decorative excess. This print offers a glimpse into the domestic sphere of the period, presented with a gentle, observational quality.
