A refined example of 16th-century Persian Nasta'liq calligraphy, featuring Chaghatai Turkish poetry framed by gold-illuminated floral borders.
This exquisite folio features the Nasta'liq script, a style of Persian calligraphy developed in the 14th century. The text consists of Chaghatai Turkish verses celebrating wine, a common theme in the literary traditions of the period. Mirza Muhammad, an artist active during the early 16th century, demonstrates a mastery of spacing and flow, with the characters arranged in diagonal panels that create a sense of movement across the page.
The composition is framed by a series of borders, each decorated with delicate floral motifs painted in gold and muted pigments. The central panels are set against a soft, olive-toned ground, while the triangular corner pieces feature blue backgrounds filled with gold foliage. This arrangement reflects the high standards of book production in the Safavid court, where calligraphy was considered a primary art form. The precision of the ink work, combined with the application of gold leaf, indicates that this page was intended for a luxury manuscript, likely commissioned for a royal or aristocratic library.
The use of Chaghatai Turkish, a language associated with the Timurid and early Mughal courts, provides insight into the linguistic diversity of the region during this era. The verses themselves follow the conventions of classical poetry, employing metaphors and imagery that were standard in the literary circles of the time. By presenting the text in this decorative format, the artist elevates the written word to a visual experience, balancing the legibility of the script with the aesthetic requirements of the page design. This print captures the balance between the disciplined structure of the calligraphy and the fluid, organic patterns of the surrounding illumination, offering a glimpse into the sophisticated manuscript culture of 16th-century Persia.
