A masterful example of Japanese cursive calligraphy by the Meiji-era statesman Soejima Taneomi, featuring fluid, expressive ink strokes.
Soejima Taneomi was a prominent statesman during the Meiji period, yet he maintained a reputation as a master of calligraphy. This work displays his command of the cursive script, or sosho, a style characterised by fluid, connected strokes that prioritise the rhythm of the brush over strict legibility. The characters appear to dance across the paper, with varying ink density creating a sense of movement and depth.
In this piece, the artist employs a dynamic approach to the brush. Some characters are rendered with heavy, saturated ink, while others are light and dry, suggesting the speed and pressure applied by the hand. The composition follows the traditional vertical orientation of Japanese scrolls, with the characters arranged in columns that guide the eye from top to bottom. The spacing between the columns is irregular, which adds to the spontaneous quality of the work.
Soejima was known for his interest in Chinese literature and classical calligraphy, and his own style reflects a synthesis of these influences. His work is often associated with the literati tradition, where the focus is on the expression of the individual spirit through the medium of ink. The lack of rigid structure in this cursive script allows for a personal, almost performative, quality. The ink bleeds slightly into the paper, providing a soft edge to the bold, sweeping lines. This print captures the texture of the original ink and the subtle variations in tone that are essential to the appreciation of Japanese calligraphy. It is a study in balance, where the empty space, or ma, is as important as the ink itself.
