A refined example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy by Wen Congjian, executed in ink on gold-flecked paper in a traditional folding fan format.
This work by Wen Congjian (1574-1648) presents a refined example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy executed on a folding fan. The artist, a member of the influential Wen family of Suzhou, was known for his mastery of brushwork and his adherence to the literati tradition. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, following the natural contours of the fan's pleats, which creates a rhythmic visual flow across the surface.
The ink is applied to gold-flecked paper, a medium that provides a subtle, reflective background for the dark, fluid strokes. The calligraphy displays a balance of control and spontaneity, characteristic of the period's scholarly aesthetic. Each character is formed with precision, demonstrating the artist's command over the brush. The composition is structured by the physical folds of the fan, which dictate the spacing and alignment of the text. This format was a popular medium for personal expression among the literati, often used to record poetry or prose for private circulation or as gifts between peers.
Wen Congjian's approach to the script reflects the stylistic values of the late Ming period, where calligraphers sought to harmonise technical skill with individual character. The work is marked by the artist's seal, which provides authentication and connects the piece to his broader body of work. The preservation of the ink on the gold-flecked surface allows for a clear view of the brush pressure and speed, offering insight into the physical act of writing. This piece serves as a record of the literary culture of the time, where the written word was valued as much for its visual form as for its content. It remains a representative example of the refined artistic output associated with the Suzhou school during the 17th century.
